The reason I made this video is that I discovered that the infamous clip of art critic Robert Hughes saying that Andy Warhol was “stupid” could no longer be found on YouTube. After a little more research, I realized the documentary The Mona Lisa Curse that the clip came from had also been expunged. This funny bit of art history, which was so refreshing given how every other critic sings the most ridiculous praises of Warhol, had been quietly shelved. Unless people know the name of the documentary and seek it out elsewhere, Hughes’s last commentary on art has vanished.

This video is dedicated to resurrecting that oh-so-funny clip, and celebrating the outspoken art criticism of Robert Hughes. There’s a lot of additional footage, commentary, and some of my own creative video editing excesses.

English: Of course, today it’s not right to call anyone stupid. And we must respect his accomplishments. We only see brief snippets of Warhol interacting with others. Personally, from what I saw in the crazy montage frog film, I think he’s missing something upstairs. Perhaps it’s even an act – The crazy artist persona – fitting for the times. I like his portraits. I think they’re unique. However, even when I was younger, I thought he was weird, off-putting. There’s a documentary on Netflix about Warhol, and I can’t even try watching it. So, intuitively, for me, he’s a turnoff, even visually, which also looks contrived. But only Warhol knows the truth of who he is.

      2. Yeah, I wouldn’t call someone stupid, which is a bit why it’s refreshing to go back to a time when someone had the gumption to do so, openly, in a documentary. And in Warhol’s case, I’m sure Hughes felt justified in saying it explicitly because all we ever hear is what a GENIUS Warhol was. So, it’s going against the grain when the grain is really just BS promotion for the market. But, yeah, generally, let’s not be cruel.

  1. We no longer as free as we once were Eric, this is a sample of the control “they” have over us… And I fully agree that Warhol’s art was, is and will always be stupid. I don’t think so of the man because I never met him…

  2. I always enjoy your videos and opinions on art, great insight and I always learn something new! I can agree with many of your views on Warhol, but he was one of my first influences that got me interested in art, so I can give him that!
